There is one day you can earn 4x pay. Learn which day it is and whether or not you qualify.
Our CBA (collective bargaining agreement) includes the following language, which encourages Kaiser to grant everyone at least one of the three major holidays off:
735 b.) Premium for Working the Three Major Holidays.
Employees not granted Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Day off shall receive three (3) times their regular rate for working New Year’s Day. If the Employee volunteers to work all three major holidays this premium shall be waived.
In short, if you’re required to work New Year’s Day, and you’ve already worked Thanksgiving and Christmas, you’re entitled to 3x pay (on New Year’s Day) plus straight time pay or another day off, with pay.
One way to position yourself for this special pay: work Thanksgiving and Christmas and then hope so few of your co-workers volunteer for New Year’s Day that your manager requires you to work it.
Bear in mind that your manager must post holiday schedules 30 days in advance. It can be difficult to predict operational need 30 days in advance, and managers will sometimes disregard this contractual requirement.
722 a.) Posting of Holiday Schedules.
Holiday schedules shall be posted at least thirty (30) days and no more than one (1) year prior to the Holiday.
